Las Vegas might scream neon and strip action, but once you’re near Lake Mead or the Colorado River, the vibe flips to calm and scenic. Kayaking here lets you escape the city’s buzz, gliding across big open waters framed by towering desert cliffs. It’s especially nice early morning or late afternoon when the heat chills out and the crowds thin.

If you’ve never paddled before, no worries. Rentals and guided tours are easy to find right at Lake Mead’s marinas. One thing I always tell folks: bring water with you in a good Nalgene or camelback. Shade is scarce on the water and the sun hits hard, even outside the summer months. Also, check the wind conditions beforehand,sometimes it gets surprisingly breezy in the afternoons, which can turn an easy paddle into a workout.

For something a little different, try heading downstream on the Colorado River near Hoover Dam,calm stretches with epic views of the dam and Black Canyon. It’s a real treat if you want to see a side of Las Vegas not lit up by LEDs, and you’ll definitely appreciate the quiet. Plus, paddling is a nice way to move your legs after a long day on the Strip.
